Chisels are used for convex, conical and cylindrical features in spindle turning. They are also used for cleaning up end grain and vee cuts. oval section skews are easier to use and offer enhanced sensitivity and precise handling. they are more stable on the rest and less prone to 'dig-ins'. Standard skews are stronger and hevier and less prone to vibration. Square end chisels are the traditional choice for planning cuts on cylinders and tapered forms. Used correctly they give a wonderful finish even on difficult wood. Planning cuts can also be done with a skew chisel.

SUPERFLUTE HIGH SPEED STEEL GOUGES
(deep fluted)

The original Superflute HS1 designed in 1978 by Roy Child is perhaps the most famous woodturning tool of all time, has sold in thousands all over the world and remains the ultimate gouge used by most leading turners. Now made in a range of sizes the ½" or 3/8" gouge recommended for general purpose work and the ¼" gouge for small bowls on very delicate cuts.

Fingernail Profile Gouges
Most woodturners have difficulty in achieving a fingernail profile. Henry Taylor Tools have been providing fingernail gouge to the overseas market for a number of years and have now introduced a selection of gouges with a factory ground fingernail profile to the UK market.

We have adopted a medium grind as this is not only safe in use, but also allows the turner to modify the profile to his specific requirements.

Wing tips ground back so they cannot catch on the work. Pulling and pushing cuts can be taken Delicate shearing cuts and full profiling cuts are easier with this profile.

Roughing Out Gouges - Forged
These large forged gouges are used between centres to take the corners off and shape shallow curves.
Easy to use, safe, efficient and fast. Used with a slicing cut, they can give an excellent finish akin to that produced by the skew.

Spindle Gouges machined from bar
Spindle gouges are used for detailed shaping between centres particularly for concave curves.
